Capturing Life With a Little Grit and a Lot of Grin.

Hi, I’m Curtis

I'm a photographer and storyteller from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. I love wild spaces, coffee, dry humour, and building forts. I have worked as a photo guide in the Canadian Arctic, Mongolia, Antarctica and Greenland. I am writing a book about dogs but get constantly distracted by the ball.

Stories For the Curious

What Could Make a Pharmacist Turn Photographer?

I’m instantly awake. My bladder knows way before my mind; this is a red alert. I need to get out of this mummy bag, find my boots, and pray the storm that's kept us pinned inside this tent for the last 48 hours graces me with a small window of opportunity. I have no idea what time it is or the date. Grabbing what I think is a jacket, I breach our shelter with all the grace of an ostrich in a shopping cart and stumble headlong into a blinding shock of white light. Here in the big empty void that is the Greenland ice sheet, two things jump to mind as I stand butt cheeks to the wind. First, this is not my jacket, and second, is it too late to renew my pharmacy licence?

Is Patience Your Biggest Fear?

“Here’s the deal”, I say out loud to myself. “You have something you like right in front of you; all your research suggests this spot will light up. Take a breath, grab a rock and be patient. Worst case scenario, you'll sit next to the ocean and watch the sun go down.” Ah yes, my inner voice of patience. This voice knows the benefit of sticking to a well-researched plan and applies reason when I start to question my choices. Sensing a challenge, a second voice in my head takes over; tempting but toxic. Not immediate, it operates in the shadows, plays on my anxieties and harvests greedily from the cracks in the confidence of my choices as a creator.

It’s the voice of The Fear of Missing Out.

This is a wonderful chance to flex your creative muscles in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. We hope you’ll join us for this wild ice photography workshop in Banff National Park!

That Time I Tried to YouTube

In June of 2020, I decided to take to the oceanside trails of my native Newfoundland. With my camera and a steady supply of coffee, I embarked on a self-inflicted journey of saltwater mishaps and local exploration. Welcome to a peak inside the addled mind of an outdoor photographer and the tomfoolery presented as I try to document the experience for a completely unaware public.
